Mat Yelvington, MA-Candidate with

Brittany Senseman, LPC-S

Do you desire to have a better understanding of yourself and the people you love around you?  Have you ever wondered why you or the people you love behave a certain way?  Part of the reason we all do what we do is because of our personality that begins developing from childhood.  With better understanding, we can grow personally, creating healthy relationships with those around us. The Enneagram Personality Assessment is an amazing tool to help you better understand your personality and why you do what you do.

“The Enneagram refers to the nine different types or styles, with each representing a worldview and archetype that resonates with the way people think, feel and act in relation to the world, others and themselves. It is much more than a personality profile that offers insight into core personality traits, as it delves deeper into the core motivations, defense mechanisms and fears that often lie in the unconscious layers of our personality structure. Your Enneagram core type is like a home base from which we make sense of individuation, integration, and development. Other words used to describe the idea of ‘type’ include resonance, identification, lens, perspective or style.” – Enneagram Solutions

If you are looking to explore a deeper understanding of yourself and the people around you, join us for our Enneagram Workshops on Saturday, May 25 and June 1. During the workshops, we will provide you with a basic Enneagram Assessment to begin exploring your Enneagram type. Then we will explain the nine Enneagram Types and how those types manifest themselves in a person’s life. We will explore the strengths and weakness of each type and provide practical ways to lean into your strengths and transform your weaknesses. Understanding your Enneagram Type could be a gamechanger in your relationships with others and your personal life.

Introducing Mat Yelvington, MA Candidate

Wednesday, August 1st, 2018

Allow me to introduce myself: My name is Mat Yelvington, and I will be starting with Anthology Counseling and Wellness as a practicum student. It is strange to me to think of myself as a student because I have not been in school for almost two decades. It is also odd for me to think of myself as a counseling student because I have been doing unofficial counseling for these past 20 years as a minister, coach and teacher.

I started my adult career working as a youth pastor in which I found myself spending a fair amount of my time counseling teens and their families through various crises and life transitions. Most recently I worked as a teacher and a coach, and I have mentored students at my school on leadership and counseled many of them through different struggles in their lives. The most rewarding to me is the numerous parents I have met with over coffee or dinner to discuss what is going on with their teen and how I might be able to help them.

I felt the Lord calling me about two years ago to receive more formal training in what I had already been doing for years, and now I find myself in my last year of my Masters in Counseling. I am excited to begin my journey with Anthology Counseling and Wellness and provide counseling services for teen guys, parents of teenagers and adult men. As I have been working in the public school system for the last 10 years, I have begun to see a shift in the way in which teenage guys are dealing with life. I have seen a lot more depression, anxiety and issues with identity and self-worth. There seems to be a real struggle with our boys today, and I want to help combat that through effective counseling. Many of the problems we are seeing with boys today, in my opinion, are due to the many men who have lost their way and need some help correcting their course.

So my heart is not only for teen guys but also helping men to find their identity and become the husbands, fathers and leaders God has made them to be. My approach to counseling is to help clients see the positive in their lives and to help them thrive in their strengths. I seek to take a holistic approach to counseling by addressing the mind, body and soul. I believe deeply that our soul needs to be taken care of just as much as our mind and body, and so I like to introduce spiritual formation practices into my counseling sessions. Life is about rhythm, and sometimes we just find ourselves out of rhythm. Counseling is simply meeting with someone to help you find your rhythm again.
